General Information & Strategic Planning

1. This section has basic information about Special Olympics – what we do, our mission, vision, values and presentations that explain our identity and global reach.

2. The 2011-2015 Special Olympics strategic plan discusses the vision of the movement for the next 5 years, and steers the organization toward its objectives across five strategic objectives – to advance quality sports and competitions, build communities, connect fans and funds, develop movement leadership, establish sustainable capabilities.

Healthy Athletes Program

For ten years Special Olympics offer free health screening and information about on the health status of her. This makes it possible for the Athletes to compete in local regional and world games. Persons with intellectual disability have limited access to health services, and the quality of services they often get is usually not the best. It is for this reason that Special Olympics created this program to give them access to health services and curb the prevalence of wide spread preventable diseases.

Family Network & Youth and Schools Program

1. Family members of persons with intellectual disabilities often feel isolated from the activities of their children. Participation of such family members in a support network provides them with the necessary resource information and training that their children may need.  Below is a collection of such resources.

2. The Youth know the pain of social rejection, ridicule or being excluded from social activities.  They are nevertheless open to new experiences, for they have personal convictions to reinforce or to defend. The goal of the Youth and  Schools program is to give the youth the necessary experience that allows to feel integrated into the activities of the Special Olympics movement.

Sports & Competition

1. Coaching:
Principles of Coaching is designed to educate coaches in coaching methods and techniques that will enhance the mission of Special Olympics in offering quality sports training and athletic competition. The Participants Manualoutlines how the mental, physical, and social conditions of the Special Olympics athlete influence his or her participation in sport, and stresses that coaches need to be aware of these aspects to understand the athletes better and to design appropriate coaching programs that meet each athlete’s needs.  

Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) for example, is designed for persons with the most severe disabilities who cannot compete in Official Special Olympics Sports or Cannot physically perform skills and/or follow rules of behavior. MATP emphasizes training and participation, rather than competition. No strict rules; participants are assisted to demonstrate their “personal bests”, competing against self. Fun competitions with adaptations permitted.

2. Sports Rules:
The Official Special Olympics Sports Rules provide standards for Special Olympics training and competition. All Special Olympics training and competitions shall be conducted in accordance with the Sport-Specific Rules. The Sports Rules may be amended from time to time and published in Addendum. Special Olympics sports competitions are intended to operate in accordance with rules established by the International Federations (IFs) or National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of each sport. The Sports Rules are intended to modify, where necessary, IF or NGB rules. In cases where IF or NGB rules are in conflict with the Sports Rules, the Sports Rules shall apply.
